About NetaCalc
NetaCalc is a free, bilingual website with calculators and guides about U.S. federal taxes for people who work for themselves: freelancers, independent contractors and gig workers who get paid on a 1099.
Why NetaCalc exists
When you work for yourself, you also do the tax work an employer would normally do for you: nobody withholds anything, you pay both halves of Social Security and Medicare, and you are expected to send money to the IRS every quarter. The rules are public, but they are spread across dozens of forms and publications, and very little of it is explained clearly in Spanish.
NetaCalc does the math and explains the rules in plain language, in English and in Spanish, so you know what to set aside and why.

How we work
- Official sources only. Every rate, limit and date comes from the IRS, the Social Security Administration or another primary source, and every page lists its sources.
- Tested math. The calculators share one tax engine with automated tests that check it against IRS tables and worksheets.
- Dated and updated. Each page shows when it was last updated, and all of a year's figures live in one file that we update when the IRS publishes new numbers.
- Corrections. If you find a mistake, write to us and we will fix confirmed errors quickly.

Who is behind NetaCalc
NetaCalc is created and run by Juan Barrera, who researches, writes and maintains the calculators and guides. NetaCalc is not a tax preparer and does not give individual advice. For decisions about your own situation, talk to a tax professional such as a CPA or an Enrolled Agent.
NetaCalc is independent. It is not affiliated with the IRS or any government agency, or with the apps and companies mentioned in our guides, such as Uber, Lyft, DoorDash or Instacart. Their names are trademarks of their owners and are used only to describe the topics we cover.
How NetaCalc is funded
NetaCalc is free to use. We plan to fund it with advertising served by Google AdSense. Ads will be labeled "Advertisement", will never be placed next to calculator fields or results, and advertisers will have no say over what we publish.
If a page ever includes a paid or affiliate link, we will say so clearly on that page. Our calculators run in your browser, and we never store the numbers you enter. See our privacy policy.
